Business Development for Creatives

Hey guys, a quick tip for creatives, solopreneurs, anybody who not only creates, but who has to go out and sell your product or service.

I got into a discussion with a voice talent a couple of weeks ago and she said to me, "You know what? I don't like sales. I don't like marketing. I feel like I'm pestering people."

Well, here's the fact. There's an old saying in business. Nothing happens until somebody sells something.

It would be nice if we could all just throw open the doors or turn on the microphone, and business would just come in the door, and people would hand us bags of money.

Now, it's true. Nobody likes being sold, but almost everybody likes receiving a valuable service or product for a reasonable investment.

It is perfectly reasonable to reach out to people whom it is perfectly reasonable to assume buy what you sell.

The second way to pester people is to try to sell them too early before you understand their needs, before you've developed a relationship.

Do your homework. Don't be lazy, and build a relationship.
